Diskus!

by Royal Delft

Diskus! is a series of ceramic plates with different handwritten statements on a variety of topics. The idea is that conversations at the dinner table don’t only have to be about work, politics or the children. The statements on the plates are provocative enough to inspire discussion on subjects as varied as friendship, women or chance, even when conversation is not forthcoming. There are eight plates in total, four Dutch and four English. Diskus! is an exclusive product derived from the cooperation between Nicole van Schouwenburg (design and calligraphy) and Royal Delft.

Plate ‘Eten’ ( which means: Food ) The text on the plate says (in Dutch): For me food is the best life has to offer, I eat so live. If I ask you what is the best thing you have ever eaten, I am sure you felt very alive at that time, with all senses awake. In love, proud after a presentation, or safe after a challenge. The dish itself does not really matter.

Plate’Ja’ ( which means: Yes ) The text on the plate says (in Dutch): I think saying yes yields more in the long term. Get married, merge, buy something nice, travel, say yes to life and improvise along the way. You never know what the right thing is to do. My father said yes on even days and no on uneven days, it didn’t make a difference to business according to him.

Plate ‘Samenwerken’ ( which means: to collaborate ) The text on the plate says (in Dutch): Sing, fight, cry, pray, laugh, work and admire. A well -known Dutch saying. Work and admire. No, not: drink, sigh, pout, sit, complain, watch and lick wounds. Or stink, fight, crawl, lie, bark, die, cheat. Work and admire someone every day, give a compliment, that is the foundation to collaborate.

Plate ‘Men’. The text on the plate says: Success isn’t good for men. It makes them much too secure. Left to his own devices a man isn’t going to reflect on life; it’s not in the genes. And a man who’s doing well has only himself to thank. He thinks. So he needs to get knocked around a bit by life. That might have the desired effect. I think.

Plate ‘Change’. The text on the plate says: I’m sure it’s no coincidence that we’re sitting at this table together. Some things cannot be mere chance; everybody has got an example of this. On the other hand I think it’s nonsense to say chance doesn’t exist. I mean what’s the chance that nothing ever happens by chance.

Plate ‘Friendship’. The text on the plate says: It’s precisely the reverse! It’s not about what Somebody has to do to become my friend; it’s about what he may refrain from doing. Friendship is not like a newspaper you cancel because you don’t like what they’ve written one day. You’re only my friend if I know your dark side and want you in my life anyway. Up until that point we are acquaintances.

Plate ‘Women’. The text on the plate says: Women are simply too nice for the top. Or too scared really, scared they might not be liked. Power demands a certain mentality: the King of the jungle is the lion, not the hamster. I’ve got nothing against hamsters, mind you; they’re sweet little creatures. But unfortunately sweetness and leadership seldom go together.
